Charles Laing Warr〔(NPG details )〕 GCVO〔(London Gazette )〕 was a Church of Scotland minister〔(MCOE )〕〔(National Library of Scotland )〕 and author 〔Amongst others he wrote “The Unseen Host”, 1916; “Alfred Warr of Rosneath”, 1917; “Principal Caird”, 1926; “The Call of the Island”, “The Presbyterian Tradition”, 1933; and “The Glimmering Landscape”, 1960 > British Library website accessed 19:18 GMT 11 March 2011〕 in the 20th century.〔(Open Library )〕
Warr was born into an ecclesiastical family〔He was the second son of the Reverend Alfred Warr, sometime minister of Rosneath, “Who was Who” 1897-1990, London, A & C Black, 1991, ISBN 071363457X〕 on 24 July 1892 and educated at Glasgow Academy and the University of Edinburgh. He was commissioned into the 9th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in 1914 and served during World War I.〔(Historic Scotland )〕 When peace returned he was an assistant minister at Glasgow Cathedral. Later he was the minister of St Paul’s Greenock and then St Giles' Cathedral. He was Dean of the Thistle〔''Dean Of The Thistle'', The Times, 27 February 1926; pg. 12; Issue 44207; col G〕 and the Dean of the Chapel Royal in Scotland from 1926 to 1969.
